Hello, we're moving to VA, and will be renting out our Logan Circle condo (which will be our only rental property) - wondering how many people jump through the hoops of getting DC business license, and having rental unit registered with DCRA. Anyone not do this, and regret it?
If they catch you, you can be fined a heavy amount. Don't risk it.
I also think that, if you ever run into a problem with a tenant, you'll have a much harder time seeking any recourse if you have not registered.
It's very easy to register & get the bus license. Thn you basically pay an unincorporated business tax annually.
I was too much of a chicken to rent out my Logan condo without registering but I found the process overwhelming. I used a service called RentJiffy. They were fabulous -- knew all of the rules and processed all the paperwork. I don't remember how much they charged but it was worth every penny for me. This was a few years ago -- I hope they are still in business!
OP here - thanks for the responses! My husband has contacted RentJiffy - there are still in business and have great online reviews.
Glad to hear they are still in business. As I think about it more now, the only real annoyance was going through the inspection process. Make sure that you follow the inspection requirements exactly. We were in a new construction building so weren't too concerned, but we got a tip right beforehand to make sure that the fire extinguisher was installed on the wall before the inspection because that is a basis for failure (and the need to reschedule an inspection). Under the sink is not good enough -- must be affixed to the wall!
