Can you ovulate while you have your period?

Anonymous
Silly question? I am on the tail end of my period but began my ovulation strips today (since I don't know when I ovulate and have very irregular cycles) and it came out positive. I know a positive test means I'll ovulate in the next 24-48 hours but this seems a little strange since I'm on my cycle. Thoughts?

Early ovulation is certainly possible. I've ovulated on cycle day 8 or 9 before. The vaginal PH and lining aren't conducive to pregnancy, though.

Are you temping?

^^ Should say "uterine lining."

It wouldn't hurt to take a pregnancy test --- I had the same thing happen to me, and it turned out I was pregnant and had been experiencing heavy implantation bleeding. (Pregnancy will also cause a positive on ovulation strips). As it turns out, I subsequently lost the pregnancy, but that was unrelated to the implantation bleeding. Good luck!

Yes, you can. This tends to happen more commonly as women get older--their cycles get shorter. I would trust the test result.

I ovulated around day 8 or 9 (so period was basically over, but just barely) and got pregnant. I now have an 8 month old DS. I was skeptical too, but it does happen!

I'm not pregnant (took a test) and it was definitely heavier than implantation bleeding. My period lasted 5 days and I started ovulating on day 4. Seem really strange to me.

Also, my cycle is definitely not shorter - it took 42 days to even get my period. Maybe it's all related though - maybe I didn't ovulate last month.

I hate OPK's for this very reason. You don't get enough information. It you're not pregnant, I'd consider using a monitor or temping. Especially if you're going to pee on a stick every day anyway. You might as well use a more sensitive tool.
