for reasons unknown, Safeway Kensington has best Avocados (?!)

Anonymous
I shop at Moms Organic Market, mostly. Whole Foods occasionally. At both places, I get mostly sucky avocados that ripen poorly and are completely unpredictable. That is for organic as well as "traditional".

For reasons unknown to God or Man, my local Safeway in Kensington has CONSISTENT AVOCADOS. Both organic and non organic. Its completely bizarre to me that Safeway of all places, where I really never buy produce, has some kind of special hookup with good avocados.

Ive seen them have a pile of not so great looking ones, mostly overripe as sometimes happens. But if they are hard and uniform, they ripen to perfection. I just cant wrap my head around why WHole Foods can't do better.

Has anyone else shopped at Safeway elsewhere and noticed good avocados abound?

I should add I eat alot of avocados as does DD so this is why I care so much!

I get my Avocados at Trader Joe's mostly. They seem to ripen just fine.

You are funny, OP. Glad you found your avocado source.

P.S. Although MOMs has great specialty items, I could never afford to do most of my shopping there. The sunbutter alone is almost $10!

I have had good luck with avocados at my local Safeway, too. The Costco ones start out really hard but also ripen nicely.

Maybe they have a good supplier or they keep their warehouses at temps good for the avocados. Or maybe the use gas to give them a little umph in ripening nicely.

Only now that you mention it, I completely agree. I have 2 DCs under three so I've been buying several avocados pretty much on a weekly basis. I shop at Harris teeter, trader joes and Safeway. Safeway always has the best. I can buy for about 6 days out based on ripeness and they never fail me. And 10 for $10 (nonorganic) is great.

I don't know about safeway but I live in Mount Pleasant and the local Bestway (sort of grocery sort of bodega) has amazing avocados and mangos. Things like meat I wouldn't even look at there (though who knows ... might be fine too)

OP here- yes MOMS is expensive, but I stick mostly to non packaged foods, so I do ok.... Loving the $10 for 10 non organic price! Have not seen that at safeway....?

Im very oonfused about Trader Joes as the two times I visited the one in Rockville it must have been before the truck came in- very picked over and almost no produce!

TJ's produce is usually pretty lame. It's gotten slightly better over the years, but overall still lame.
