Bike recommendations

Anonymous
My husband has expressed interest in getting a bike, and I'd like to get him one for his birthday (about 1.5 weeks away). Neither of us know anything about bikes though, so I'm not sure what to get. I think he'd like something decent but not too expensive (I'm thinking something in the $300 range) as he's not sure how often he'll actually get out to ride. We can always upgrade later if he ends up riding a lot. Does anyone have any recommendations (along with approx. price)? He's a bigger guy if that makes a difference (5'11", 230 lbs). Can a decent bike be had for around $300 or so?

Would I be better off getting him a gift certificate to a bike store? If so, any recommendations on a place in/near Mont. Co.?

Thank you!

I would get a gift certificate. Sizing a bike correctly is important because it can cause knee strain. I only ride road bikes (which are pricier bikes) and have no knowledge of what hybrids or mountain bikes go for these days. I go to the bike shop at 8401 Conn. Ave. The guys who work there are all very nice.

Not likely, sorry. But definitely go with a gift certificate. You want him to be properly fitted for whatever bike he gets. In MoCo, you can try Performance Bikes.

Get a Northrock from Costco. It actually gets decent reviews on bike forums. He can always return it if he doesn't like it.
