I was feeding my 7.5 month old this morning and was reading the box. Under the ingredients, in small letters, it says it has traces of wheat. I am really upset that it has wheat in it - feeding wheat to a young baby can create a wheat allergy. Was anyone else aware of this? Is it possible she is going to develop an allergy? I have been feeding her this brand of oatmeal for 1.5 months now. I am really angry. |
If you've noticed no allergic reaction thus far, then after 1.5 months I don't think you have anything to worry about. Why are you so angry? |
If it is processed on the same equipment that they process wheat cereal on then they have to list that as a disclaimer. |
The US supply of oats is cross-contaminated by wheat. Unless you specifically buy gluten-free oats, any product containing oats that were grown and/or processed in the United States should contain this warning as it has likely been 'contaminated' by wheat somewhere along the way. It is not just EB - it is ALL OATS that aren't specifically labeled gluten-free. |
My pediatrician just told me last week at my baby's 6-month check-up that recent research shows that delaying the introduction of certain foods has no effect on the incidence of food allergies. It was a strategy they tried, and apparently it hasn't worked. So don't worry about the traces of wheat causing an allergy! |
Food product labeling is annoying and frustrating. My sister has a peanut allergy, and it is a real pain.
That said, food allergies is one of many, many things you will not be able to control in your growing child. It is best to take reasonable precautions and then have faith that all will work out OK. Otherwise you stress out and turn your baby into a project. But babies will most often do what they want to do and be who they want to be. |
why so angry? relax. |
At our 9 month appt, my ped told us the same as 10:09. So don't worry! |
good lesson to read all boxes or packages thouroughly before buying them! |
My brother has Celiac disease (auto-immune, extreme wheat allergy). We have learned that many foods you would not expect have wheat. If you really care, definitely read labels carefully.
That being said, I don't think this will hurt your child. I also wouldn't sweat the small stuff. There are too many things like this to get "angry"... BPA bottles, phthalates, hormones/antibiotics... |
