We had our gutters checked last fall and had gutter caps put on. Don't think there's a problem with my gutters, but I'm noticing in my older (1960s) home that some parts of the wood around the gutters look black or flaking. Can't tell if it's the paint or what. Also we have ants running up and down one side of the front porch that is wood, from the roof line to the concrete stairs.
Who should I call to check for wood rot or soffit (is that what it's called?) repair? I don't want to get ripped off but i'm afraid it's an expensive job, if what i'm thinking has to be done (rip out all the exterior wood between the roof and the rest of the house? I don't know...) |
We had something like this (rotting molding from a perpetually overflowing gutter), and had it fixed when we replaced our roof. So I would say, call a roofing company.
It was not an expensive part of our job. Maybe an extra $800 on top of the $10k roof/ chimney job. I won't recommend the company we used, just because they left a mess behind and had to be called back to fix little things they had forgotten. |
OP, thanks for asking this question. We have the same problem minus the mold and the ants. We had a roofing company here to do some actual roof work, and they said they couldn't/wouldn't handle the soffit/gutter work, so I also do not know whom to call.
Any other suggestions? |
Where are you? I would call Fletcher Roofing if you are in MoCo |
Try Metro Gutter in Alexandria. They replaced some wood along our gutter and could figure out the problem. |
OP here. I'm in Falls Church. Any other references or advice is appreciated! |
Springfield Roofing repaired a slate roof leak for us. 703-354-3229 David Fudge was our estimator. we found them honest and reliable
You could have carpenter ants based on your description of ants running up and down. they are attracted to wet/moist wood. Capitol Pest Control was out for me last week--turns out it was nothing but call them and have them come look for carpenter ants. They are 240- 455-5179 Treat the possible ant problem. Replace the soffitt and you will be good to you. |
you will be good to "go" I mean. LOL

Live in Haverhill,ma need gutters cleaned and suffits repaired or replaced. Very large Victorian home. Do I call roofing company or carpenter. Any good referrals ? |
Handyman, carpenter wouldn't be good use of skills |
George Krilis did ours. He did a great job. http://www.virginiagutters.com |
If I needed this work done I'd call George at Fairfax Gutter LLC.
http://www.homeadvisor.com/rated.FairfaxGutterCompany.31933911.html He doesn't sub out the work to someone else, is cheaper than other companies I've used, and does good work. He replaced the gutters on my home. |
^ To add. Personally I'm not a fan of gutter covers, but if you have a ton of trees in the area they're probably not a terrible idea. Keep in mind the gutter covers need to be removed periodically and cleaned underneath as stuff WILL accumulate underneath and clog up the downspouts.
Going to a 6" K style gutter w/ larger 4x3 downspouts helps and prevents clogs. |
We're in Arlington and have used Shiner Roofing for some fixes on our old (1930s) house. I'm no roofing expert, but they seem to have done a good job. |
