We are thinking of purchasing a home in the area and our daughter would go to Parklawn Elementary in Alexandria (Fairfax County) in about 2 years. Thoughts on the school, kids thriving, doing well, etc...? Thanks! Any feedback is greatly needed!
Parklawn is a great school, due to the staff and the principal. Ms. Akroyd knows all of her students, and their families, and is truly dedicated to the school. While I don't know if she will be there still, when your child gets there (she has been there for a long time), I would imagine the community would ensure her replacement has the same values in terms of being truly focused on the students in the building.
We are looking in that area as well. Great to hear!
So when is the principal going to retire? I have a 4yo and want to take a chance with this school, but didn't know about the principal possibly leaving.
I am not sure when she will retire; I simply know that she has been there for about 20 years. She will probably still be there when your child is in kindergarten at least, if not for the full time of your child's tenure there. It is unusual for a principal to remain at one school so long, but she is dedicated to the school, and won't leave for another position, but rather to retire from the field..when she does leave. And again, she has made absolutely no announcement or hint about when she plans to retire; I simply put it out there as an FYI, since she is the one who in essence makes the school what it is.
Thank you 10:10!
Reviving an old thread, we are lookng at a house in this area as well, any recent feedback? I see there are many portable buildings that went up fairly recently, is it overcrowded?
Ms. Akroyd retired this year. Larry Aiello is the new principal.
All the schools in that part of Fairfax Co are overcrowded or very close to it - http://www.fcps.edu/fts/dashboard/ |
Thanks for the link, great stuff. While I believe a principal can make or break a school, its the parents and teachers I think that really develop it. Any experiences? My child would be going into K next year.
Parklawn's nice, but Glasgow middle/JEB stuart high are not
