Consultant - I have no idea what a reasonable hourly rate is if I am fluent in Spanish/French....

Anonymous
Law Firm is seeking Spanish/French speaking PT assistant/paralegal, translating documents etc. This would be through a staffing firm 20-25 hrs a week, I was asked what hourly rate I desire, I have no idea what I could reasonably ask for...

FWIW, the recruiter told me they haven't been able to find anyone and I do know that translations run around $25 pg. depending on subject.

I welcome any suggestions, thanks!

We have contract linguists who translate from foreign languages to English for my office and they are typically paid by the word. I do not know what their rates are because I do not execute their contracts.

Someone else asked if you have professional experience doing translation work, and also if you have experience working with legal material. These are good and relevant questions because simply being fluent in the target language does not mean you will be able to produce professional quality translations. Many of our contractors still need to have their translations reviewed and edited because they are not "camera ready" even after working with us for some time. Anyway, your salary request should reflect your level of experience.
