Anyone on high BP meds?

Anonymous
I've been taking Bystolic (a beta blocker) for 7 months now, without any negative side effects. Just recently I have started to have shortness of breath and other asthmatic symptoms. After lots of different tests, my doctor suspects it's my BP meds causing the symtoms and has decided to take me off the beta blocker and put me on a dieuretic to control my BP. I will start the new BP meds tomorrow-does anyone take a dieuretic type medication to control their blood pressure? Any side effects I should be aware of? I'm a 23 y/o female, 5'2, 110 pounds if that makes any difference to anyone with insight. Thanks!!

I took a diuretic but had to stop taking it because I developed pretty severe photosensitivity. A diuretic alone was never enough to control my pressure anyway. I currently take an ACE inhibitor and beta blockers.

You are pretty young to have developed hypertension. (I was the same age as you but I have a strong family history) I hope they tested your kidney function and did a metabolic screen?

I read recently that you can almost cure high BP with beet juice. You should google it and ask your doctor.

No side effects from diuretics here. Good luck OP.

I am not on those meds, but have had shortness of breath lately due to allergies. Think I may be developing asthma.

I take Losartan HCTZ for high BP, though I'm older than you. Works pretty well. Diuretics like HCTZ have been around for a long time and are typically the first medication to try for high BP. I assume you have also looked at your diet. The DASH diet can be really useful, but isn't easy to follow long term.
