My 11 y.o. son gained about 1 lb and 1 inch in 6 months.... if he continues at that rate, he'll have gained 2 pounds/2 inches in a year.
What's average for this age? |

This website seems to suggest up to 10 pounds a year of weight gain is normal for 9-10 year olds.

| Judging from my child's friends (none of whom I have weighed) it's not uncommon for kids to alternately gain weight and stretch taller as they head into puberty. So, while 1 pound per inch is a slow weight gain as an average, it's not particularly surprising for a six month period in time. |
| You are concerned about your 11 year old gaining 1 lb over a 6 month period? You parents are freaking nuts, seriously. |
| Some kids have that spurt later on. I would not worry unless your ped is concerned |
| 1 lb seems very low per inch. Are you worried he isn`t gaining enough? |
His pediatrician told him that she wanted him to use a booster seat in the car until he hit 65 pounds regardless of age or height, so he's been waiting to hit that 65 pounds. At his 11 y.o checkup he was 63 pounds. I assumed he'd gain a pound in 6 months, but he is only 64 pounds now. So I was wondering, is it unusual for a 11 year old child to just gain 1 pound in 6 months? |
Yes, I am. He is very skinny. He is about average height (56") so he's not teeny tiny or anything, and gaining 1 inch seems normal enough for his age, but gaining only 1 pound in half a year to go with that inch seems very low, for an already skinny kid. His doctor says the important thing is, he is growing taller. |
