Do SOL scores count in AAP application?

Anonymous
DC had 1st grade SOLs recently. For what I can gather, many children were distracted during testing due taking it in the loud classroom. DC has had the max score beginning and end of K and beginning of 1st grade. If this score isn't the highest, can this impact DC's AAP aplication? Based on NNAT2 score, DC has passed the minimum score for this year's AAP pool.

There are no SOLs until third grade in fairfax County.

Thanks for posting this -- my 3rd grader just had his first SOL today and I thought we must have missed something at his base school in years past!

You must mean the DRA or MRA?

Part of the GBRS with commentary includes info if the child is above grade level for reading/math. If the test showed not above grade level, that would be included. In FCPS, a first grader can't be tested above the end of 2nd grade completion (a 28 on the DRA). If your child tested above a 16, that is above grade level.

Pp here - I meant dra - DVD scored 16 at the beginning - just not sure if score will be 30 or whatever number they score to at end of first grade ( but don't think score fell below 16). Do these scores count? Thanks

Yes, DRA scores will be included along with report cards. Not all kids are early readers, including many AAP students... and not all early readers are considered gifted.

The first grade DRA score should not count. When a child's AAP screening file is prepared by the school in the middle of second grade, a current DRA score is shown on the Screening Summary Sheet, but I believe it is the DRA score from the beginning of second grade. I don't think that they retest in the middle of second grade just to get a more up-to-date number for the screening file.

I didn't see any notation of MRA from any year included in my DC's screening file. The Screening Summary Sheet has a blank to be filled in for DRA but no spot for MRA.

How high do they test up to at the beginning of 2nd grade for the DRA? The highest in 1st grade was a level 16 at the beginning of the year.

In fact, my gifted son was not an early reader. That's an advantage, like being the first to do multiplication tables, that disappears so early.
