Family vacations, swimming at the pool, playing outside, reading, arts and crafts, sport camps, museums, writing in a journal, cooking and practicing math facts. As a former FCPS 2nd grade teacher (yes, I did the GBRS for my students) and a mom of a rising 3rd grader and a rising 6th grader in AAP, that is about the extent of our summer! Now if your child is struggling in any subject, you may want to do a little extra practice in that area.

When my kids were rising 2nd graders, we did Girl Scout camp, tennis and swimming camps through the Fairfax County Park Authority, art camp at the Arlington Art Centre, and TIC Camp for programming, robotics and sports.

When DD was a rising second grader, this was our summer plans: first an spirit-based summer camp, that lasted through july. Then, we went to the delaware beaches for a week. Followed by a big vacation to the Oregon Coast. While there, DD spent a lot of time exploring the tide pools with her teen-age cousins. Then, we did a day trip to Mount Saint Helens.

At the end of this, we were two weeks before the school year. No Prep. Kid in AAP...great summer.
