Where to register your bike?

Not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but I'll give it a whirl anyway. We just bought new bikes from REI and want to register them in case they're stolen. I've heard that your homeowners / renters insurance will cover them if they're registered. Who do I register them with? Also, do I need to let insurance know we have them or just submit a claim if they're stolen? Do you need an add-on insurance for bikes like you do for jewelry? Thanks!

you can register them with your police department.

I'd only let insurance know if you are adding them to a specific rider with itemizations AND the bikes were super expensive. You could always contact your insurance rep and ask what they suggest.
