Alternatives to birth control for recurring ovarian cysts

Anonymous
During my last appointment, my doctor mentioned the possibility of going on the pill to help prevent recurring ovarian cysts. The cysts I've had are painful, but typically only for a week or so out of the month that they occur. I don't want to go on the pill and am wondering if there are other ways of trying to prevent them. On a related note, I've been thinking of trying Mirena for birth control, but read that one of the side effects are cysts. If you get cysts, what type of birth control do you use?

Not that I'm aware of and I've had ovarian cysts all my life - two ruptured, so you have to monitor. I was on the pill for decades just so this wouldn't happen again. Guess what? They return if you are in menopause. Then you have to go have very expensive tests done, a CA-125 to ensure that the cyst is not malignant, and repeat test every six months to monitor the size of the cyst.
