I'm considering a cruise with my sister to the Bahamas, namely because it sails on the date we need to sail in December. I've never been to the Bahamas - - can anyone offer their perspective on it? The cruise has two stops Nassau, and Freeport. I am pretty easy to please, because all I want to do on this cruise is sit in the sun with a pina colada all day, every day.
I've been to Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Antigua, Aruba, Cozumel, St. Thomas and Martinique. Does it compare with any of those? Is it worth doing, or best to find another cruise itinerary? Thanks! |
I don't like the Bahamas -- been to Atlantis a few times and it is a little cheezy (although I hear The Cove is nice) and the town is worse than other Caribbean towns. There is no real local flair IMO. You basically wouldn't want to leave your resort, I understand Jamaica is like that so that may be a point of comparison for you. Also the weather is more like Florida than anything in line with or south of PR. It is def not like Aruba, Cayman or St. Thomas. I have been to those places as well as San Juan, St. Barths, Curacao, St. John's, Virgin Gorda and Barbados. I'd find another itinerary. |
Stick with your cruise - you will be fine. You will spend less than a day in either place so I would not worry too much about it. Just find a nice beach and relax. BTW, I am from Jamaica and have been to a few of the other islands and I really think they get a bad rap from tourist. I think that a lot of the all inclusive resorts use "fear" as a way of keeping tourists behind the walls of the resort - and robbing them blind. Most of the resort areas of these islands are relatively safe. Yes, they are gritty and the people are poor and are not what you are used to, but if you look at the hard facts they are not a long of reports of actual crimes againts tourist that does not involve some other factor - sex or drugs in most cases.
BTW, in terms of climate, I think that Nassau is more like Jamaica, but more like Barbados in terms of culture. Enjoy your trip. |
I felt freeport was too chilly in December...
I'm perhaps spoilt, cos I found the water inhospitable If you're truly looking for warmth, go further south at least Dominican republic/cancun latitude |
Silly question, but will a cruise from South Carolina to the Bahamas the last week of December be... COLD?!?? I was envisioning basking on the sun deck with a froufy drink daily. This could be a problem... |
I spent a christmas in freeport
Daily high was about 75, I guess...not as warm as Nassau, for certain I had to buy a sweatshirt for evenings and my kids wouldn't go in the pool or sea |
We've been in Bahamas for the first time last December. Sheraton Nassau is wonderful, but we didn't like the city at all. We did like Paradise Is.
My dream came true when we went to interact with the dolphins in Blue Lagoon Is. During those moments I was the happiest woman. Weather was very warm during the day, however, at night I needed a light jacket. |
