Miscarriage recovery

Anonymous
I just found out my hcg level 2 weeks after my D&C is 780. Ahhh! Does this mean I'm likely going to need another D&C? My doctor put me back on methergine and then he's going to test again. He said to just wait and see what happens, but I'm really freaked out. The first D&C was traumatic enough! Anyone have advice or had a similar experience?

I am so, so sorry. I can completely relate. I lost a pregnancy at 20 weeks - I had to go through delivery and still needed a D&C the following day b/c of bleeding. I was on methergine for 2+ weeks and still bleeding. They kept me on meds and bleeding did not stop and levels still high. This was not usual per my OB.

A few weeks later, while I did not need another D&C I had to go into for a more specific removal of tissue. They did not want to do another D&C to try to minimize trauma to uterous but (actually twice) I had to go in for similar prodcedure. My understanding is that it is more often the case the later you have a miscarriage.

One word of advice is that I would contact your infertility specialist and make sure they are collaborating with any decisions your OB makes. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

I didn't have a D&C, but I was in the high 700s two weeks after my miscarriage (two weeks after passing everything, so maybe timing could be similar to having a D&C?). The next week my levels dropped a lot, but then it took another 4 weeks for me to get down to 4, which my doctor said was good enough. I was really stressed about the high number - I really didn't want to have a D&C (I would have originally and actually had one scheduled - but once I had passed everything (confirmed by ultrasound) I didn't want to have to do a D&C). It was a tough time for me, I was very ready to have the physical part over so that I would only have to deal with the emotional part, and I needed to see the numbers go down to believe that it really was over. But eventually that happened for me, and although I'm still only 2 months out I can tell you it does get better. The numbers will do what they do - but know that for some of us it just takes longer to drop than for others. Best wishes to you in these hard times.

i've had a natural miscarriage (no D & C) and just wanted to say i am so sorry for your loss.

I had a D&C also- ususally your levels should at least drop 50% the next day after the proceedure- have they ruled out Ectopic?

I had a D&C. I was glad I did it since they were able to take out cells from the embryo that I miscarried and determine if there was a genetic disorder...that helped my fertility assessment which ultimately led to my pregnancy.

I know a D&C is a tough and an awful procedure. But if it can provide more information to why the miscarriage occurred, it's worth it.

I just have to post my fabulous D&C story. I feel great! I had one yesterday morning and I haven't hardly had a cramp. I've had 3 spots of blood in over 24 hours (and my doc said I might bleed for 10 days!). I probably could have gone back to work if I needed to. We ended up going to a friends house for dinner and the wine tasted fabulous. I hope I don't miscarry again. I'd rather be nauseous and tired. But the D&C was much easier than I thought it would be.

I miscarried at 12 weeks and had to have a D&C mid-July. I don't know what my levels were at 2 weeks, but at almost 4 weeks I was just below 20 and very discouraged. At 5 weeks post D&C I finally got below 5 and got my period 10 days later. I know it's tough and frustrating (I felt like I'd never get my period again/would never get back on track TTC) but it will happen! Hang in there and know that everyday you're getting a little bit closer TTC!

13:17 here....I think I jumped the gun on my glorious recovery. I've had 2 crampy, bleeding days. I feel full and heavy and really want to go to the gym. But I know I should relax and take care of my body.
I need to get focused on something else these next 6-8 weeks. My mind needs a break from TTC and IVF anyway. A busy fun fall is welcomed!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had a number of miscarriages, and treated each one differently, so I can really compare apples to apples! lucky me. I've had a D&C, took mifepristol and methotrexate (for possible ectopic). The D&C was the least disruptive. I had minimal pain and bleeding afterward, and certainly less than the mifepristol. Emotionally, it was also better because the procedure and the recovery were over more quickly. Like one of the posters above, I also got the genetic material analyzed, which helped me feel a bit better b/c it was a chromosomal mutation not attributed to my husband or myself.

good luck relaxing and taking some time for yourself.

Sorry to barge in on this post but I was just wondering if it is standard to have your HCG levels measured after having a D&C? I had a D&C back in May after a 12 wk missed m/c but have not seen the Dr since. I have gotten my period back and it seems normal enough. Should some other follow up have been done?? Thanks in advance

Let me tell you that you should not let this go. I had an ectopic pregnancy that needed to be taken out. The doctor that was performing the surgery missed a piece of the pregnancy tissue when he was taking the pregancy from my tube. I went back and had my levels checked one week after surgery and still had a +beta. He wanted to give it another week and retest. I didn't make it to the week. The pregnancy tissue adhered to my spleen and grew until the point of rupturing my spleen. I had no idea what was wrong with me and I almost died on my bathroom floor from internal bleeding before a family member came home to find me unresponsive and blue. The doctors at the hospital had no idea what was wrong with me. They opened my belly and there floating with all of my blood was the pregnancy tissue and a hole in my spleen. After the surgery they checked my level again and guess what?? It registered at 0.

Just please always be an advocate for yourself. Do what your body is telling you to do.

to answer 14:20. No I am not getting my HCG tested after D&C. I think if something was feeling wrong, I would jump at getting back in quick for a check-up. My recovery has been fine and I'm not bleeding 7 days later.

Thank you to the PP 15:08, I was going to raise that possibility as well. It's really REALLY worth it to do the follow-up to make sure all everything that needs to be removed IS and the levels are back to ZERO.

Rupturing a fallopian tube is rare, but not unheard of and is very dangerous.

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP.
