Tanning

Is it okay to go to a tanning bed when you are pregnant?

Probably not. There are links between ultraviolet radiation and neural tube defects because the radiation breaks down folate. Obviously UVAs and UVBs are worth avoiding anyway, but you should DEFINITELY check with your OB before tanning while pregnant.

Besides the safety issues, I was reading today about temporary skin discoloration during pregnancy and I read that exposure to the sun can make it worse. I saw this on babycenter.com in the week-by-week descriptions of pregnancy. Have you considered spray-tan if you just want to look tan for a special occasion?

You know--I am not even sure if that's a good idea because of what you are breathing in--maybe if it's one time only but wouldn't do regularly--which I know is a bummer is you like to get some color esp. in winter.

I know it sucks but no tanning is okay during pregnancy, even Mystic Tan.

I've been told that tanning in a bed is not a good idea. One other thing is if you happen to go some place tropical to get some UV rays you will tan/burn much faster/easier. Back in August we went on a family vacation to St. Thomas & St. John and I was only 3 months along or so and I burned very easily which pre pregnancy I did not. So it's best to cover up or use some protection.
