How much do you spend on groceries?

Anonymous
Me and my husband are spending about $500 a month on groceries not including lunch for work.

People think our grocery bill is high but I'm wondering if it's just that groceries are more expensive in the DC area.
Or is it just that we actually are spending too much.

We are a family of three, just one kid who is 2.

Roughly $450 a month. Us and a 2 year old, but the 2 year old eats second breakfast, lunch, and snack at daycare 5 days a week. The bill includes lunches as we pack ours.

Your bill sounds normal to me. Ours may be a little more or a little less in any given month depending on how much we eat out and/or if we throw a dinner party. Or if H's family is in town, then the whole budget is blown....

We have one baby who is on breastmilk. We spend $495 just in groceries. We have premade food delivery at $150/month. On top of that we eat out 8-10 times a month. I shop at Costco, Safeway, Giant, Trader Joes. I marvel at how much we still spend on food.

roughly 400/month. This includes restaurants and take-out food. We mostly cook our own food and bring leftovers to work.

about $600/mo for two adults and two teenagers, plus several meals out/takeout per week.

The family I grocery shop for spends roughly $400 a week for a family of four

Please tell me how you spend $600 month for a family of four. I've tried, I can't make it work.

About $170/week. 2 adults and 1 child. I buy as much organic as I can find. No real sale shopping.

We do it but just barely. Sometimes it is closer to $700 if our older son is home from college (then it's 5 of us plus the dog). But we do eat out about twice a week, and I buy my lunches at work several days a week too. Generally it's a lot of chicken, Lentil and Pea soups I make, mac and cheese, pastas, burgers (beef and veggie), salads, rice, assorted veggies such as broccoli and green beans. My teens don't really like fish, but I get that about once a week because DH and I like it. We generally get that from Whole Foods. Most of our groceries are from Target and Trader Joes. I try to buy what's on sale when I can. Also the Target Red Card saves me 5%, which adds up.

$1000-1200 a month for 2 adults and 1 toddler. We have to pack all food etc for the toddler's full time preschool. We also pack all of our lunches for work. We maybe eat out for lunch 3 times a month. We buy mostly organic and cook from scratch for most everything. Lots of veggies and fruits! As a family, we maybe eat out 1x a week, unless DH and I go out for date night (which is not as often as I'd like). We end up shopping mostly at WF with monthly or bi-monthly runs to TJs for staples, paper goods etc. I envy those who have the time to shop at multiple places weekly.

Wow, 1200/mo for groceries for two adults and a toddler seems high, even with inclusion of lunches. You may envy people who shop at multiple places -- I envy you if you can cost justify getting the bulk of your food at Whole Paycheck.

About $50/week for 2 adults lunch/dinner on weekdays. This is not including occasional lunches with coworkers/friends, out on weekends by ourselves or with extended family members & friends.
