| We travel a lot with our 20-month old and have always been lucky to either have had a balcony/patio, bathroom large enough for the crib, or reasonably priced suites with a separate bedroom. We have some travel this summer where these were not options, so we have just a standard room (no balcony/patio, oversized bathroom, or suite). I know people do this all the time, but can you explain how it works with sleeping. Our DS naps from 1-3pm and goes to bed at 7:30pm. He would never go to sleep if he sees me standing 2 feet away from him, and he is a very light sleeper. How do you make this work? Thanks! |
| You turn off the lights and go to bed early with your toddler. Or bring a Kindle to read or watch tv on your iPad with headphones... |
| Depending on the size of the bathroom, I would first try to put him in a pack and play in the bathroom of the hotel room. I have done this a lot and it has worked very well if the bathroom is big enough. Otherwise, put him to sleep and you go to the bathroom to read, get on computer, etc. |
| We take a nap when the toddler naps and go to bed when they go to bed. |
Agree. The extra rest will be good for you!

| we used to bring an extra sheet and some thumb tacks and try and put the pack and play in a corner and hang the sheet up as a room divider. It didn't always work but sometimes it would make it possible for us to read in bed after dd fell asleep. |
We did this and stopped doing hotel rooms that weren't 1 BR suites after spending too much time with one parent trapped in the dark room bored to death during naptime. Tried using a monitor in a B&B where we could see the door and use the sitting rooms but reception wasn't good enough. |
| Good news is they eventually grow out of naptime so then you just have the earlier bedtime issue. |
I once sat in the bathroom, eating a sandwich and playing on my phone, while DD took a nap in the room...

| My kid naps in the stroller when we're out and about. DC also has a 9pm bedtime. So we all just go to sleep together. I get shit from other parents about how/when our child sleeps but its what works for our family. |
| Turn off the lights at 7:30, wait 15 minutes, and then turn them back on. Most kids won't wake up. |
+1 We just did this this past weekend. I hid behind the bed or stepped out of the room until she fell asleep. |

We have eaten dinner in the hotel bathroom while our son fell asleep! We would just hang out in the bathroom or in the room in the dark until our son fell asleep. Then we would turn on the TV or the lights after he was asleep.
It's painful but it's the only option. Never thought of putting a crib in the bathroom because I would wake the baby when using the bathroom! |
| Will you actually be in your room for nap time? Like PP, naps are in the stroller or carrier as we are out and about. For bedtime, we coslept, so getting our child to sleep was not a problem. After they fall asleep, you can read, talk, watch TV, whatever. We were/are also flexible with bedtime in trips. |
| Wow this thread makes me glad I cosleep. |
