OP, you can get a bat in your house without a bat box or without your neighbors having a bat box. Chances are you will be fine. If for some reason you are bit, there are the shots.
It's very difficult to actually get bats to nest in a bat box. We could do away with the bat boxes if we stopped destroying their environment. |

Did you know the only person ever to die of raccoon rabies lived in Herndon VA? And they don't know how he got it?
This area has more rabid animals than most places in the country and does not manage it to boot. |

| My whole family got rabies shots after waking to a bat in a cottage last summer. Except for the co-payment sting, the rabies shots were no big deal. Even the kids didn't complain. Bats in the house/and or shots are not worth the angst that I can see this thread creating. |
