Scuttlebutt says 24 furlough days next year in DOJ

Anonymous
Sorry to bring this up yet again, but why the heck no days this year and that many next year? Unless this again is an empty threat....

Scuttlebutt from what kind of source and what component?

The AG was very clear in his memo that they were accessing many one-time funding sources (e.g. previous year's money) to avert furloughs this summer and that all bets were off for next fiscal year.

Not exactly sure where she is getting her info- but she was always spot-on and ahead of the game when she said no way no chance for 14 days- down to 11, and then correctly foretold ahead of time no days, so she's proven to be early and reliable

What the hell are you talking about??

24 furlough days would trigger RIFs which I think most agencies will do whatever they can to avoid.

What are RIFs?

Reduction in Force--eliminating jobs.

I thought they did furlough to alleviate or not have to go as drastic as reduction in force

THe budget sucks but scuttlebutt at this point is so completely uninformed and fact-free as to be next to worthless.

DOJ is lucky it's dodging the bullet this year but no one has a clue what the reality of next yr. will be. Prepare for the worst.

This doesn't make sense to me-- how do furloughs triggers RIFs?

There is a limit to how many furlough days can be imposed. If funds are so low that an agency cannot make up the difference within the limited number of furlough days, then it must use RIFs instead.

There can be no scuttlebut until there's an enacted Appropriation for the next fiscal year. Please delete this thread.

True, although the chances of having an enacted appropriation for FY14 as of October 1 seem very slim. Based on past history, it is reasonable to expect that we will be operating under another CR for at least several months.

Do you anticipate the appropriation to have an upward or downward departure vice this year? Well then there's your answer vis a vis scuttlebutt.

Yes, it is looking like a minimum of 20. Hopefully they will get their act together and announce the days and plan very soon so it can go into effect in October, as opposed to talking about it forever and squeezing all the days into calendar year 2014.
