timeframe for clearance background investigation

Anonymous
I'm in the process of getting a TS clearance for a new position. I had to provide my current supervisor's name and contact information and now I'm a little bit worried that the investigators will be contacting him early in the investigation process. He's a decent guy, so I think it's unlikely he would do anything retaliatory, but I expect the clearance process to take at least 3-4 months and it's going to be awkward if he finds out well in advance of when I intend to give my notice.

Has anyone had a similar experience recently? Just to be clear, he's not one of my primary references, but I still think it's likely that they will contact him, since this is my most recent job.

I just did my 5 year reinvestigation, and it took about 12 months before I knew I was still cleared and could keep my job.

Lol the clearance will take much longer than 4 months.

Wow, that seems long for a reinv. Mine took about 4-5 months. Initial TS will probably take longer though.

depends on the agency.

the average time in clearance/adjudication varies widely even for 'same' levels of clearance depending on the agency/adjudicating authority.

checkout the clearancejobs website or other websites that detail the breakdown.
