Steak question...is there an equivalent of Peter Luger's in DC?

Anonymous
In-laws are coming into town next month and they love themselves an old-school steakhouse. Any suggestions on a place that provides excellent steak in an historic atmosphere a la Keen's in NYC or Peter Luger's in Brooklyn?

Nothing in DC is going to have the same tradition as Peter Luger. For the NYC style steakhouse style, there is Smith and Wollensky or the Palm. Both serve dry aged steaks, which is what you really are looking for. Capital Grille and J&G Steakhouse are best for location just steps away from the Capitol and White House respectively. For a local steakhouse and a better value, Ray's in Arlington or Silver Spring can't be beat. Above all, don't go anyplace that wet ages their meat. You might as well just go to Costco and get their prime meat and grill it yourself.

Capitol Grill. Perfect for the grandparent set.

Now I am craving the bacon at Peter Luger, goddamnit.

For the "only in DC" thing, I would vote The Prime Rib.

21:42 here again. Peter Luger is in a league of their own---far different STEAK and atmosphere/ambience than the places/chains mentioned on here. Not to mention the sides...dessert (pecan pie)...mmmmm

For DC, I agree with 21:31.

Though I haven't yet tried Bourbon Steak in Georgetown. Sietsema loves it.

Just don't go to BLT Steak! IMO way overpriced for the quality/experience.

Bacon poster here. DH had colleagues in town recently, wanted to take them to the Prime Rib but they wanted BLT Steak instead because of the dress code. They all thought it was just so-so, although we had a great meal there a couple of years ago.

Was not that impressed with Bourbon Steak but that was for lunch, haven't had dinner there.

OP here. Oh how I was hoping there was some secret gem of a place that channeled PL here in Dc but nonetheless, these are all great recs/tips. Thanks!

(Now I want the PL bacon too. And the pecan pie. Sigh.)

Not an old fashioned type steakhouse, but Ray's the Steaks might be fun for them....a little bit of a change of pace, more laid back, but great steak and nice atmosphere. They might get a kick out of the place

God, the steaks at Ray's are incredible. I've never had a bad meal there.

I agree Ray's is terrific and would have the most original DC character. The one in Silver Spring is a little nicer atmosphere and broader menu than the one in Arlington. Better for impressing family/guests. The one in Arlington is very informal and I think they try to turn the tables a little faster. It's all about the steak--it's great, enjoy it, then get out.
