Can anyone recommend a resort and hotel to stay? We are planning a 5-6 days trip in a second week of January.

There are so many options in Salt Lake. Do you have a budget? Will there be kids? What level of skiing are you at? |
Where in Utah - SLC?
With or without kids? Are you looking for resort (in the __Canyons) or will you stay at a hotel and rotate through the different ski places? |
Definitely stay in Park City or Deer Valley where you have close access to 3 good ski areas and great nightlife/shopping. Commute over to Alta/Snowbird if you want to try something more challenging for a day. The Canyons Resort is more affordable option than Deer Valley Resort or some of the Park City Resorts. Also, Park City Transit is a great way to get around up there. Have fun! |
The Canyons is nice. |
I learned how to ski in Snowbird ![]() |
I'be been going to Utah every year for the past 10 years. I prefer the skiing at Alta and Snowbird. Usually better snow as well. If you have young kids, the ski school at Alta is fantastic. Solitude, in the same area, is also a smaller resort with a small ski school. If you like groomed snow, Park City and Deer Valley may be to your liking. I don'tcare for Park Cty or The Canyons but am a fan of Deer Valley. Brighton is my least favorite and is mainly for snowboarders. Are you interested in apartment or hotel? |
We've been to Deer Valley and Solitude and liked both. Deer Valley is gorgeous, but more expensive, and a bit more crowded. Solitude is easier -- we rented a condo right near the lifts, everything is close by, and there are no crowds. However, there's not much to do there, which is fine if you have small kids and just want to kick back in the evenings. Deer Valley and Park City have more nightlife. |
Shhh...Alta is (suppose) to be a secret! ...I guess I'll see you (or any other DCUMers there - we're heading out there in March) |
OP here. Thank you very much for all your responses! We are beginners/intermediate skiers and going West for the first time, so any information from people with actual experience is just priceless.
Going without kids. Prefer to have some nightlife and good food. Definitely no snowboarders ![]() |
I am an intermediate skiier who basically skis just one week a year during our annual trip to Utah. Given this, I like to start my trip off with a lesson. You can do a morning semi-private lesson on Day 1 where it may be just you, your hubby and a guide. In addition to reminding you of some fundamentals that will help you ski better throughout your trip, your guide can introduce you to the resort, show you to some less crowded terrain that fits your skill level, and give you some good scoop on where to go eat during your stay (on and off property). I have found this to be a great investment, and last year when I didn't do it, I felt like my skiing suffered for it the whole week. It doesn't m
Also, if you can get a direct morning flight out, you can ski for free that first afternoon at Deer Valley, Park City or the Canyons through their Quickstart program. See http://www.parkcityinfo.com/quickstart/ for more info. Have fun! |
Depending on your resort, some will give you a discount/free pass if you ski on the same day of your arriving flight. Just double check though, some airlines+resort combinations don't honor that deal....but it is a great incentive to book an early flight, pop your skiis on, and ski for a few hours in the afternoon. |
OP here again. Thank you everybody. Now I have all the information I was looking for! |
