What is the waitlist like for out of bounds to attend Ross Elementary?

Anonymous
We are outside the bounds of Ross by a few blocks. Can anyone tell me what the wait list is like for out of bounds applicants? Starting to plan for kindergarten. Also, would be interested in feedback form parents who have kids at the school. The other option is Tompson - but location of Ross is more convenient.

Most of Ross is OOB

We applied for 2008-09 school year for Kindergarten at Ross. We were #4 pick in the lottery and didn't get in - according to the DPCS website there were 0 spots available for Kindergarten - I believe they just have one class per grade.

Yikes, that is not encouraging! Thanks for the feedback. May I ask if you chose another DCPS?

10/28 8:03 here again.

We also applied to and got into Eaton (by luck, mainly because our daughter's neighborhood school closed and it gave us a higher priority in the lottery). I really enjoyed the parents and principal when we visited, but turned it down at the last minute - mainly because it was too far from our home.

We ended up sending her to Bancroft Elementary in Mount Pleasant. Although everyone I've spoken to cites the administration as weak (I tend to agree - I ended up posting on a Mt Pleasant forum to get a tour after no one would return my calls requesting a tour), my daughter has two fabulous teachers and a pretty small and very diverse class of 19 kids. I chose Bancroft because it is a bilingual school (#47 on the list at Oyster!) and it's close to our neighborhood. The kids also have art, library, music, science and PE once a week - have a new library and pretty strong PTA. So I would definitely check it out - we had no problem getting in out of boundary.

When the OOB process starts for SY 09 make sure to check out how many spaces are available at each school for the grade you need - many of the best schools unfortunately have 0 spots available. Good luck in your search - I know it can be daunting!
