Expectant and Postpartum Moms

Hi,
our frields and colleages gave us lots of gifts that were not in our baby registry. As a result, we ended up having things that we don't need or like. I am thinking about my options here. 1. Donate to salvation army or another nonprofit (I know this is a nice thing to do, but we plan to buy a house soon, so my husband and I decided to be... more careful with money, so to be honest I will use this option if nothing else works). 2. Sell on ebay (haven't done this before, does anybody have any experience? How much time does it take (register, set things up, photos, descriptions, mailings, etc.)? I work from home, so the opportunity cost for me might be higher if I could spend my time working). 3. Take it to a consignment store?? (Any ideas for an appropriate place in MD/DC?? 4. Keep it (I really hate having unneeded junk in our home, and would rather give things away). OTHER? (everything is brand new, common brands like Gerber, etc.). Would apprecaite any suggestions. |
| Sell it on Craig's List. You won't have to ship anything like you would on eBay, don't have to lug it to a consignment store, etc. |

Re Gift.
Do you have receipts? I second CL, brand new items (especially) sell like hotcakes. It may be a hassle, but including a picture with your item is much more enticing to buyers so you may want to do that. I got rid of a bassinette, jumperoo-thing, wipe warmer thing, and other miscellaneous baby-clutter that we didn't register for, but received anyways. Everything was brand new and still in the box. I appreciate the well-wishes, but we just didn't need/use it (plus we live in a tiny townhouse). |
| You cannot return the stuff even for credit? Try that route. Otherwise, Craig's List all the way! |
| I say hold off until you've had the baby. You never know what you might want then... |

If they sell these same products in standard stores like Buy Buy Baby, Walmart or Target, they will give you store credit if you don't have a receipt. Even if items came from small boutiques, I don't know of many stores that don't offer store credit for returns w/out a receipt. Plus, if people were smart enough to give you a gift receipt with the items (pretty much standard etiquette of gift giving these days, unless they want you to think that it was regifted), you'll definitely get store credit. If you try to resell, it's not likely that you'll get anywhere near as much money for the items as you'll get in store credit.
When I was registered at Bed Bath and Beyond for my wedding, if I returned something that had been bought off my registry, they gave me a cash refund (sometimes you realize later that you just didn't really want X). Buy Buy Baby is now owned by Bed Bath and Beyond and accepts Bed Bath and Beyond's 20% off coupons, so it's possible that they may have a similar refund policy re: cash back for items purchased off your registry. I think that Macy's has a similar policy for returns off your registry when you have a Macy's credit card. Finally, take this as a lesson that when a person is registered, unless you know their taste exceedingly well, do them a favor and either buy a gift off their registry or give them a gift card or cash. |
| Try taking everything to BRU first and see what they will give you credit for and then try BuyBuy Baby. I even told them when I brought things to return after my shower and having the baby that I didn't know if it was from their store or not and they said - let's just check. They were really nice about it. |
Target will not give a credit without a receipt. |
| Babies R Us has also instituted a stricter return policy - boo, hiss... |
Yup, and if something is sent to you online, even from your registry and it is not carried in the store they will not take it back. ARGH. |

I just had this experience and took things back yesterday. Went to Buy Buy Baby and told them we weren't sure which items may have been purchased there. They did not care if the item was purchased at their store - if they carried it, they took it back and gave us store credit, which we used for diapers.
They were even nice enough to exchange a $40 nursing bra I bought that had a broken clasp - this was despite the huge sign warning that these items are never returnable. I didn't have a receipt for that either. And they ignored the obvious stupidity of not checking the bra before purchasing and then losing the receipt. |
| I have found that the BabiesRUs in Baileys Crossroads is very "loose" with their return policy as well even without a receipt. If they carry it, they will take it back. I don't know if that is the official store policy, but no one seems to care. |
I think that just made it easier to decide where to register (and shop)! |
Yes, but I love, love, love that if you paid with a credit card, but don't have your receipt at Target, they can just scan the item and your card and it will find the receipt for you. Doesn't really help with a registry, but I do love that I don't have to worry about losing a receipt from Target as long as I paid with a credit card. |
