What's the deal with microdermabrasion?

I'd love it if people who have microderm regularly would weigh in. I've had three sessions so far, and I don't see an improvement in my lines, breakouts, etc.
The only advantage is that my skin becomes super smooth for a day after the treatment, and then it's back to normal.

Am I an atypical responder? It's too expensive to justify the same results I get with a regular exfoliating cleaner. TIA!

No one? Come on, I know you're out there.

I did a whole series of microdermabrasion at my dermatologist's office and thought it was a complete waste of money. Yes, my skin felt smoother temporarily, but that's it. I get the same results when I use the Clarisonic or the Neutrogena microdermabrasion tool.

I did it in my early 20s to try and combat some moderate acne. It was helpful, but I can't see getting it just for smoothness; any scrub will get the same results in my opinion.

I've done a couple sessions, I find its great at sucking out those blackheads that I can't get rid of, especially on and around my nose, but otherwise decent facials are just as good.

I have found it much more useful now that I am in my mid-40s (eek!). Some of that may be that I have no time for my skin right now so I need all the help I can get! I was doing it once a month for awhile and got a lot of compliments on the results.

It really helped my skin when I was pregnant but that was the only time that I had real problems with breaking out.

Have you tried DermSweep microresurfacing? I've seen great results and its comfortable too! Maintainance treatments every 3-4 months was recommended.

It's my understanding that microdermabrasion is really for the purpose of eliminating fine lines. The idea is that if you remove or break up your first layer of skin (the stratum corneum), the body thinks you have a mild injury like a scratch or something and replaces the lost skin cells with new and healthy ones. This supposedly removes visible imperfections like sun damage, mild acne, and fine lines.

Also, since you are removing a layer of skin, your lotions, etc will work better because you can penetrate more deeply.

I've never done it. But I imagine it can help over time. IF you're not seeing results, it may be that they're not penetrating deeply enough, not removing enough skin, or that you're a bit impatient.

Honestly, if all you want is smoothness, I have found amazing results with this $5 Sephora pore cleansing pad.

I am not a huge huge fan of scraping off skin, and I'd prefer to do it chemically with something gentle like lactic acid. I really really like this dermalogica one, and it's sort of changed my life a bit. Mind you, I do this ONCE A WEEK. Don't overdo it!

Best of luck!
