Program Managers in NPOs- help!

I am not even sure how to phrase my questions, but for those who do program management (or work on the program side, vs. development or communications) for nonprofit organizations- how can I make the jump from the law (career senior paralegal)? I do some volunteer work for some NGOs (mundane office work like database help and stuffing envelopes) to try to build a network. I have a broad range of interests so I could work for orgs that focus on many things (education, women's issues, international development, hunger, just to name some). Not as interested in working for professional associations.

Just any insight would help. How do I find a mentor?
