Painted hardwood floors?

| We just purchased a house with beautiful hardwoods. However, the owners painted the hardwood on the stairs. Can the paint be removed/sanded out? Trying to figure out if we have to replace...Thanks! |

| Our whole upstairs was painted AND under vinyl flooring. We had it all removed and refinished. The floors look great now. |
