Lisbon and where else?

Anonymous
I have a conference in Lisbon and I plan to take another week to sightsee - I've heard of Porto, Sintra etc along the cost.
Is there another city outside of the Lisbon area that would be worth travelling to? Likely take the train, 8 year old boy in tow.

I think your 8 year old will love Sintra because there are some really cool palaces and castles to explore.

Also about an hour north of Lisbon is the walled hill town of Obidos. It's a medieval town that has a great castle at the top and you can walk on top of the town walls which is really fun (and a little harrowing!) My 10 year old loved it. We actually stayed at the castle which is a Pousada (government owned hotels that are converted castles, monasteries, etc.) I would highly recommend a day there.

Porto is great too - old, somewhat gritty, and a fun place to hang out for a couple of days.

The food was great in Portugal - if you like seafood don't miss the different local versions of seafood stew in each town/city.

Have fun!

There are posadas all over Portugal. Check the website - each one is different and they're all refurbished old forts and castles. Amazing places to stay.

Was going to mention Obidos and Sintra. Also, a little further out is Convento de Cristo in Tomar, which is fun to explore.

Thanks all - but what about travelling further - Seville, Spain? It's 4 h I think. Madrid?

9:47 here. With only one week, I'd stay in Portugal. We drove from Lisbon to Sevilla and it took much longer than four hours.

There is so much to see in Portugal. Stay in Pousadas - the one in Porto is an amazing palace. Also the Duoro Valley (wine country) is beautiful and is dotted with lovely towns. A boat ride on the Duoro is nice too.
