OP of the 'should I renovate my kitchen now' thread. Have decided to put that off a year, but need to figure out what to do with the floors in the meantime, as the current family room floor is builder grade carpet that I really don't want to live with. (Kitchen and family room are basically connected across the back of the house and will truly flow into one another when we renovate, so need to have the same floors.) The kitchen area is a pretty terrible vinyl tile, but I can put up with it. The rest of the house will have hardwood, and we plan to put it in the kitchen/family room as well when we renovate, but I don't think it makes sense to put floors into the space now while we're still finalizing the kitchen layout.
So am thinking some cheapish DIY laminate for the year (or so if it drags out) until we truly renovate. Anyone have thoughts as to my best option for this? |
| I would not waste money putting in flooring that you're going to rip up in a year. |
| OP - we are in a similar situation. We are going to put hardwoods in throughout, but skip the kitchen until we are ready to completely remodel it. I have hardwoods in my current kitchen and while I love them I hate constantly worrying about ruining them. The new place's kitchen flows directly into the family room (one big open space) but I just won't do those kitchen floors until we are absolutely ready. |
OP here. I really, really hate the builders grade carpet. A LOT. Definitely enough to justify flushing a couple hundred dollars on flooring material so I don't have to live with it for 12+ months. |
| Laminate is not supposed to go over carpet -- it will unclick due to too much bouncing |
OP again. Plan to pull up the carpet - am actually going to have the wood floor guy pull it up/dispose of it. So will be putting something on concrete. (I suppose bare concrete would be an option. Not great, but better than the carpet.) |
| What about cork floors from ikea? |
| I was going to say cork, too. IKEA sounds like a good idea. Last time I was at Community Forklift, they had some, too. |

We did a blue slate look FreeFit floor.

| The cheapest ikea laminate is just 0.65 per sqft. |
