does GW have a good NICU?

Anonymous
I'm trying to decide what hospital to deliver at and am inclined to GW, as the doctors seem good. GU also seems good, but less convenient, and fewer doctors.

My concern is that I haven't heard anyone say good things about GW's NICU. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you!

GW has a wonderful nicu -- my baby was there and i was terrified to enter the NICU but it was so peaceful and calm --it's a "quiet" nicu -- so no talking, minimal beeping and really very serene, not at all what i expected. Nurses are confident, calm and very reassuring helpoing us with feeding, diapering etc. My baby ended up being fine and it was a good experience for us. I've hear GU is good too -- definitely stay away from Sibley -- they barely even have a nicu -- in fact, they don't call it that (i think they call it speacial care unit) -- it's a level one which is barely equipped to deal with anything beyond jaundice. i'm always shocked at all the people who want to deliver there -- i think it would be way worse to have to medivac out of there should there be a problem..

I second what PP said. If there is a chance your child might be born with complications or premature, please do not go to Sibley. We are amongst the unfortunate ones to have had a very sick infant who ended up being transferred to Georgetown because Sibley was not equipped to handle his case at all and he suffered multiple complications because of it.

I liked Georgetown. Not all nurses were nice but they all seemed very good at their job and I thought the doctors were great. They literally solved a very mysterious case that ended up saving my son from further complications, which we are very grateful for.

My DD spent 3 nights at the Gtown NICU and we were very impressed with the level of care she received there. I could be wrong on this, but I think Gtown and maybe Inova Fairfax have the only level 4 NICU's in the area. There is only one OB practice that delivers at Gtown though, so you may be limited in your choice of a doctor.

I absolutely cannot say enough about the GW NICU. It is GREAT!!!!! I was supposed to deliver at Sibley but was only 23 weeks when I went into labor. So I was transferred to GW. They did a great job for my son I wouldn't deliver anywhere else!
