We were lucky enough to get into 2 of our top choices and chose to go with our immersion charter option; we also have our prior inbound school experience to draw on. I noticed that at the charter haven't gotten any emails or contact except for the offer of a tour for newly admitted families. Our IB school does new parent coffees with the principal and existing families and a tour. Our other option, which was lovely, but not for us, put new parents on a welcome listserv and invited us to an upcoming school picnic so we could meet families.
It's doubly odd because the charter school has its major fundraiser event coming up in a couple of weeks so I've assumed we'd all be asked to participate, but have heard nothing. |
| While I understand you've had these other experiences, give your new school a break! Some schools haven't even settled their wait lists, and if your new school is YY which I'm pretty sure it is, they consider the fundraiser a good initial way for new families to meet existing families. My family and I cannot attend, but I'm not worried we're not being sufficiently welcomed, it's only late April and the school has plenty of time to provide welcome. DCPS hasn't even reached its enrollment deadline yet. Give your new school a break! |
| If it's Yu Ying, there is a note about attending the gala in your acceptance email. |
| early this summer you'll be invited to the parent portal and to some get-togethers. relax. |
This was my experience too (though I recall the portal access coming later in the summer). I'm not a super-involved parent, but my guess is that the super-involved types are currently killing themselves with gala work. I don't know if there will be a Kidfest this year, but if there is that's the place to meet folks in a relaxed atmosphere. |
| Pace yourself, OP. |
| It does sound like your new school is Yu Ying....and all new parents have been invited to the Gala. Like 06:33 said, check your email again. Going to the Gala is a great way to start meeting folks already at Yu Ying! |
| OP, sounds like maybe you need to stay where you are. |
The schedule is different this year. Previously it was Kidfest in May and Gala in June, this year the Gala is in May and Kidfest in June. Plus, there's the China trip to factor in. That all seems more complicated. |
Seriously! Isn't it enough for now to have a spot at the school when so many are struggling with Plan B and Plan C for their kids and it's still only April? |
