Private & Independent Schools
| We are seriously looking at Green Acres for my DS, who is an only child, and we live in the middle of the city. The commute would be difficult and I'm concerned about setting up playdates. Can anyone provide insight on these issues? Thanks so much! |
| You can call the school, but I'd say over 95% are from Montgomery County. There are so many quality schools in DC--why Green Acres? It's not that exceptional! |
| But, it is that different. I live a mile from Beauvoir, and we not even applying. Not a good fit, but Green Acres is. |

Hi. We live in NW DC and have two children at Green Acres.
Since the start of the school year my children have had about a dozen play dates during the school week. We have had many families over for brunch or dinner on the weekends and we have been over to their homes too. Our living in NW DC or their living in various parts of Maryland does not seem to faze anyone. I figure when you go to a school that is geographically diverse you can't worry about these things too much because your child will end up best friends with the child that lives furthest away anyway. |
| 9:47, are you new at Green Acres this year, or have you been there awhile? |
| Yes, this is our first year. - 9:47 |
| In response to 20:58, MANY schools in this area are exceptional in their own way. If a family is looking for an excellent progressive education ... Green Acres and Burgundy Farm are wonderful, and yes, exceptional schools. |
| Not to hijack this thread again, but what makes you say that these schools are exceptional? |
|
Each family has their own definition, I'm guessing, of what makes a school "exceptional."
-- Exmissions to highly regarded high schools or Ivy League colleges -- High ERB, SSAT, and/or SAT/ACT scores -- Children who grow into independent, thoughtful, intelligent, self-motivated, responsible citizens -- Supportive community that nutures the whole child to achieve social and emotional growth along with academic or intellectual growth -- Graduates that go on to be "successful" (which requires another subjective criteria list that differs across families -- True diversity I'm sure others would add and delete from this list for their own definition. But according to my own measures for "exceptional" schools, Green Acres and Burgundy Farm make the cut, as do many other schools in our area. |
| another green acres parent here. yes it is true that many families come from maryland, but not all. i would encourage you to take a look at the school before deciding anything based on location. my son takes the bus to and from school. his stop is in chevy chase dc basically at the dc line (western avenue). i drop him off at 7:37 every morning and he arrives back at 3:45 in the afternoon. the bus is wonderful. it's fun for my son, and it makes the commute bearable for me (i work in dc). |
