NDI -- New Dimension Inc

We are considering using NDI to build a new house for us in NOVA. Would like to get some feedback from those of you that have use them before. Specifically,

1. How is the quality of their work?
2. Are they easy to work with and stick to the time table?
3. The price quote on their website is always for a full but unfinished basement, if you factor in the cost of finishing up a basement, plus the site work (permit fees et at), is NDI still very competitive in terms of their price?
4. are the appliances, cabinets and fixtures good quality or are they just builder grade basic?
5. If you don't like NDI, who would you recommend? I prefer to work with a company that have existing plans to save me the headache of have to decide everything myself.

Thanks for any thoughts you have on this.

If you are interested in learning of the process from start to finish this guy did a blog on it with tons of pictures.
He used the base line finishes so I hope the uppity people can hold back their complaints.

They look kind of cheap

Here's a spec home they're listing for $1.15 in Vienna. All builder grade stuff in the bathrooms, even the master:

Now, before you all jump on me for being "uppity," my main problem is that in this price range, other builders are including real stone countertops.

PP, I thought the house looks lovely and the finishing looks great, eventhough I don't like the carpet floor.

They are known for being a budget builder.
I don't think that house looks that bad.

Budget builder ==> bad quality? Or good quality budget builder?

Looks pretty nice to me (not fantastic but plenty nice) - any idea what he actually paid? It would help to set a baseline- "you can build THIS house for $X or spend 3x on a Griffin Head"

Here is what I think and I am no expert .

It is this model http://www.newdimensionsinc.com/Web_Products.asp?ProductID=600&

Base is $263k
Teardown in PH is about $430k (used to be less) http://www.redfin.com/VA/Falls-Church/1921-Cherri-Dr-22043/home/9471410
Teardown, permits, utilities etc... $30-50k (easy tear downs in that neighborhood)
Total Today would be about $723-743k

This house is around the corner from me. It looks nice and went up pretty quickly. It's a modest-size house for new construction but it looks great. There's another one just like it in the neighborhood two blocks over (siding color is beige instead of dark blue).

Probably pretty close- I'd add $10K for minor upgrades and $10-15K on the tear down (we were quoted $75K for an "easy" lot) so you end up flirting with $800K but the list value of a new build in that area must be higher than that.

We built a house with NDI four years ago.

The quality is fine. We did not consider ourselves to be building our dream house. Four years in, we have had no major problems. There are a few minor issues, like hardwood floors getting small gaps as the house settles. But, overall, we get a ton of compliments on our house and we are generally happy.

They were very easy to work with - we liked the process and they stayed on time, yes.

We did not have our basement finished - we did it separately a year later. We spent less money doing it that way. Having said that, the overall cost of our NDI house was very reasonable and I think even if we had done the basement with NDI, it still would have been a competitive price.

Appliances = very good. Fixtures = good quality, kind of boring/generic looking. Cabinets = I like them, but I'm not super picky.

We definitely would build with NDI again. One of the nice things was that they had modest house plans that fit into the neighborhood into which we were moving. We were very conscious that we did not want to build some crazy 7,000 SF house in a neighborhood full of 1940's bungalows.

I agree with PP's point that NDI is one of the few builders that offers smallish house plans (for the new build). They have several options under 3,000 sqft, which is downright slender for a new house.
