I can see both sides here. I wonder if anything like this would happen in the DC area.
I also wonder if the number magically starts getting smaller http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/she-the-people/wp/2013/04/24/west-virginia-lawmaker-wants-kids-to-work-for-free-lunch/ |

Public school is free. Why not put them to work in order to take classes?
What's good for the goose is gravy for the gander... |
| wow - make the kids pay for their parent's being poor?? how humiliating for those kids.... |
| Awful. This is why people hate Republicans. |
I agree with this. You are punishing kids for the sins of their parents. |
| Oh my god. PP, being poor is not a sin. |
Yes, I know. It's just a saying. |
I grew up in WV. The sad thing is, we had at least one kid in my school who was clearly not well-to-do and who I know would work on his family's small farm after school. And to think now he would have double-duty.

| Every man should be educated according to his station in life. It is a waste for a farm boy to learn algebra. Like the Amish and mormons. Some are born to be dumb |

Your blanket statement is ridiculous. Typical liberal: Accept and be tolerant of everyone ... unless they disagree with you. And THAT is why people hate Democrats. |
| Wow, he sounds like a charmer. There is a difference between a handout and food for a young, school aged child. If anything, create jobs and child care for those who care able to work on welfare, but do not punish the children because of their parents limited income. |
Really, you are the one saying "typical" all the time, and you are bothered by an overgeneralization? Total hypocrite. |
| Pay for that high calorie deep fried food? Have you lost it! |
| As a kid who got free lunch at a school where that was a minority situation, it's shaming enough without having to work for the crappy lunch. Also, I did work. babysitting at 12, fast food starting at 16. I"m still bitter. |
