Doesn't it seem like there has to be more going on here? Two of their kids just up and died? I don't understand - kids are usually pretty resilient with things like colds, stomach aches and even pneumonia. Just seems odd.

Not at all. Two hundred years ago most kids died before adulthood. Not all of the improvement will be due to medicine - most is probably from hygiene, clean water etc. Given this 2/9 seems about right.
