Camp Louise/Camp Airy- Jewish sleepaway camp

Anonymous
We are considering sending our kids to Camp Louise/Camp Airy this summer and wondered if anyone had any first hand experience with either? I've heard good things about both, but noone with any direct experience. Any information or thoughts would be very helpful! Thanks!

I know several grown up friends who loved the place and still keep in touch with others from the camp. They are all very Jewish and most of their best friends are Jewish in case that helps give you a picture of who goes there.

The fact that A&L are kosher "style" will also give you some insight into their (for lack of a better term) "Jewishness." A short Friday night service at dinner, a 45-minute service Saturday morning, a short Havdalah service at dusk. The rest of the week, the programming is pretty much non-secular. If you don't find that adequate, by all means look elsewhere. Otherwise, your kids will have an absolute blast as three generations of my family have.

My mom went there, and I did as well for 8 years (although that was over 20 years ago). I'm definitely curious too how it is now....maybe my daughter will go! Although I can't imagine her being away for 4 weeks like I was. Maybe 2

My daughter is going for her 2nd summer, she is 9. She LOVED it and spoke about Camp every day practically this year.

My son tried Airy last year, as well as 2 of his friends. My son did not like it but I think its more because he doesn't like being away from home. Both of his friends are going back this summer and loved the camp.

I think a lot of these camps started in the days when Jews would not have been welcome at the traditional sleep away camps. But for observant Jews it could be helpful to have a camp that keeps kosher and observes the sabbath.

Nice camp, not as many activities as some of the other sleepaway camps in PA, NY and ME. Little geographic diversity (mostly MD kids) Lots of kids who go with school friends. Less expensive than many others.
