liver failure or liver cancer

Anonymous
I need advice on what to expect.

My beloved 14year old dobie was just diagnosed with liver failure or cancer. We are opting not to find out which is the case, as we wouldn't do chemo.

Right now she's lethargic and only pees a tiny bit. Going on meds today. Her behavior changed about three weeks ago, and the change in peeing about 4 days ago.

Any stories?

I've loved her so much and know she's near her end, so I'm just wondering what to expect and how to make her the most comfortable. She's the only dog I've ever had, so I've never been through this before. The vet was really vague. He said that if it's failure it could slowly fail and if it's cancer she could go quickly.

Ideas on treats for her? Vet said no more eggs or meat. The only other food I know she likes are sweet potatoes.

Thanks.

I have no experience in this but wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through this. It's always hard when the end is near because dogs provide such unconditional love. Have you googled things on the Internet? I suggest knowing what your plan is if things get real bad - can u get your dog to the vet if he becomes immobile? Would you put to sleep at your house or at the vet? It's good to be prepared with the logistics as the emotional part is rough.

I have never experienced this OP, but I just wanted to say I am very sorry for what you and your precious doggie are going through.

I have lost a dear pet in my past and I currently dread the day when I will have to bid a fond farewell to the pets I have now.

The love these animals give us humans is unconditional....Something many of us have never experienced with our own species.

Anyway, whatever happens, I wish you the best and hope you + your furry friend will find peace.

Our dog had a tumor on her liver and spleen, suspected cancer but stopped testing because we weren't going to do chemo or surgery on a dog her age.

She had some periods of bouncing back while on pain meds and an appetite stimulant. Finally, it got to the point where she didn't want to eat anything or take the medication. I didn't want her in pain, so we had her put to sleep. She lasted about 4 months after diagnosis.

OP here. Thank you.

Today has been confusing. Periods of lethargy and one seizure (I'm pretty sure). But she's eating a normal amount of wet food and gets up and wags her tail when we get home. It's just so hard for me to know what to do. She barely pees and it's dark orange and she strains to get out the tiniest bit of poop, but today she walked pretty normally. Yesterday she'd walk and stop and just look at me.

Thanks for the responses.
