Every time I called there (either for application information, open house scheduling or a wait list question) I was met with an unpleasant person on the other end of the phone. Of the three different people I spoke to, they were really abrupt and unhelpful. We applied anyway, just because tuition was so inexpensive and they cashed our check immediately. I called in January to inquire about when the play date would be arranged. I was told that all of their nursery students were moving up to Pre-K and they were accepting no new students. They had no problem accepting my application check though.
Good luck. |
I had a similarly bad experience a couple of years ago when I called to know more about the application process and to sign up for an open house. They abruptly asked me whether I had already submitted my application and fee, and sounded definitely arrogant and not helpful. |

Is this the place on P and Wisconsin - approximately? I think I called this place a few years ago when I first started looking and I remember the person on the phone was a rude and she covered the phone to ask the director something and I heard the director say something along the lines of, "Well, if she can't come in during the day then how is she supposed to..."
I don't remember after that but the implication was that if I am a parent who works outside the home during regular business hours then how was I supposed to do what the school expected me to do. I never toured the school. We never got past this first phone call. I may have been thinking of Little Folks. Is that on Wisconsin. I know, I could Google. |
| Neither is on Wisconsin. Holy Trinity is at N and 35th, Little folks at N between Potomac & Wisconsin, and Children's House (closer to what you are saying) is on Dumbarton between Wisconsin and 31st. On Wisconsin are Georgetown Montessori (south of M) and there's one on Wisconsin at Volta - don't know the name of that one. |

Sorry, I Googled and mapped. It's Little Folks I called.

That is outrageous. |
| I am a former faculty member there, left to stay home with my child. I know it is hard not to judge from your initial contact but I'd suggest giving it a chance for parents who want their kids to attend Catholic school. The teachers are very dedicated, the administration is committed to stretch tuition dollars as far as possible to embrace new educational goals (i.e. they added foreign language for all students in the 90's, they studied Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences as a faculty for several years and made a huge effort to embrace the idea of teaching to different learning styles, and they have a full-time school counselor). It is a great little school. The downsides: some classes only have one class which means if your child doesn't click with the teacher, there's no alternative, the playground is a concrete square or a blocked-off city street, and, as you mentioned, the office staff can be prickly. Consider a visit, though. Don't let the office ladies scare you off! |

Several generations ago, it was THE place to be for Catholic status seekers and social class strivers. It was also an excellent place to receive an education, and fed to similarly august Catholic institutions like Visitation and Gonzaga.
Perhaps it's because the striving Catholics have more private school options, or fewer have the need to prove themselves in this way. Whatever the reason, it's no longer the place to be for many, and sadly, as a result, the place has lost its lustre. |
