What's the deal with this college? A friend went there and I take it I am supposed to be impressed, but I'd never heard of it until he mentioned it. I am from our west. |
Its one of only three all male colleges left. Not impressive academically. Kind of dumb Southern guys although often rich dumb Southern guys. I went to al all women's college in VA and was never impressed with these boys. Dated one for a few months but it was just too boring and he was sweet but, well, boring. I preferred W&L boys myself. |
LOL...ditto to the previous poster. I also attended a women's college in VA and had similar impression, but the VMI guys were even worse than the Hampden Sydney ones! |
It was in the original Preppy Handbook from the 1980s![]() All boys, southern gentlemen. The other pp got it right---reputation is for wealthy Southern men that are not the brightest. We went on a road trip there one weekend in college (one of my HS friends went there). It was quite a fun weekend ![]() |
I find this common on the East coast, someone's parents paid 50k a year for them to go to some "fancy" pants small school that no one but them has ever heard of. Middlebury? Sorry, not impressed. |
It is for dumb guys, I know many who went there from my hometown. And I mean dumb, couldn't get into UVA, JMU, William and Mary, etc.
There is a saying HSC, where the men are men and the sheep are scared. |
That college is about connections more than anything. It's all old money Southern boys. Think fast-track to the Good Ol' Boys clubs in big Southern cities. |
I don't know about the dumb thing. Could be true but I think the majority of their grads--a very high majority--go onto get advanced degrees. The grad I know went to Duke Medical School. |
My father went there in the '60's and it had a far better academic reputation. He went on to graduate top of his class at Medical College of Virginia.
That being said reputations often negate reality --- for instance - to all the PPs who went to a VA women's college and rated the HS men poorly - just so you know those of us who attended women's colleges in New England, consider your women's colleges in VA to be nothing more than fluffy finishing schools for the over-indulged. So it is all in perspective my friends. |
Oh, snap! ![]() |
+100 ![]() |
Ouch! Snap snap ! |
Indeed. I associate Smith with hiking boots and generally useless college majors and Wellesley with female students who couldn't quite manage to get into an Ivy or a Williams/Amherst. And Mount Holyoke simply draws a total blank. |
This is such a nasty thread. First there's OP's post, sniffing about how unimpressed she is by her friend's college (nice friend you are, by the way) then everyone piles on about how stupid all the students are at this particular school.
Really, who gives a pluck what any of you folks think? I have no connection whatsoever with this school, I don't think I've ever met anyone who graduated from it, but I'll take their whole graduating class over the smug superiority of you folks. |
OUCH! |
