| What is the longest commute that is livable in your opinion. 45 minutes each way? one hour? 30 minutes? |
An hour every now and then is fine, but prefer no more than 30-40 minutes on average. |
| 45 minutes max door to door. I once had a commute that would often reach an hour in the evenings, and I was a real grump when I got home. |
| I don't mind my 45 minute commute-but it's not in a car. 15 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of metro. I read the paper, listen to podcasts, etc. if I had to drive it would be totally different. |
| Now a day 45 mins is easy and pretty common. Rather spend some times on the road and enjoy bigger space at home. Somebody spending 1-2 hours one way daily. |
| 45 minutes would be too long for me, certainly in a car, but it's doable. Longer than that? No, thanks. |
| 15 minutes. I will absolutely sacrifice square footage for time. |
| DH does 1:10 in the AM, 1:30 in the PM. We have a beautiful house on five acres and private school is cheaper out here, plus several nearby guys work in his office and switch off driving (carpool). So far after 5 years, we think it's worth it, but it's not easy all the time. |
| My max is 30 mins with traffic. My usual commute is 20 mins. |
| my commute is 25-30 min, some walking and metro. For me 45 min would be the absolute max |
| For me, 20 is good, 30 is tolerable, 40 is pushing it. |
|
depends on the job.
a job i hate...10 minutes. a unique job that has all the bells and whistles....1.5 hours long commute times reduce life expectancy, it is a proven fact. |
|
For me at this time in my life, 30 minutes is the max. Once the children are out the door, I can be more flexible. However, if it were longer than 30 minutes, it would have to involve public transportation. DH is similar.
This is probably why we chose a smaller close in house rather than larger far away house. |

I'm ok with about 45 minutes each way, because mine includes a mix of driving, metrorail and walking. (Driving about 10 minutes, walking 10-15 minutes, metro 20-25.) My previous commute started out manageable, but then stretched to an unbearable 90+ minutes each way once I had to add daycare (3 miles from home) into the mix.
This is why we spent about $200K more to move from Fairfax to Arlington. (also upgraded to SFH.) Worth it. |
| I'm ok with about an hour, whether it is driving or public transportation. It can easily take an hour to get from one part of DC to another at peak times, sadly. |
