| DH owns a plot of land out of state, in a quasi-vacation spot, which was deeded to him twenty or so years ago by his mother when he was in college because she could not afford the taxes. The land is in a community subdivision of sorts, which means that in addition to taxes we're on the hook for fees to the subdivision fees. We had the land on the market for a long time, at a sale price well under the tax-appraised value (which is about $5k), but had no takers. We've looked into donating the land, but because it's in a subdivision, the charities we've talked to don't want it (understandably). So now what? The taxes and fees are current, and we intend to keep them that way, but we'd rather not have this expense, we don't want the property, and nobody else seems to want the property either. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! |
| Would the neighbors immediately adjacent want it? Like a way for them to create a larger yard. |
| Just don't pay the taxes. A lien will be placed against the property. And eventually it will be sold at tax sale. |
This was my first thought. Alternatively, maybe the neighborhood would like it for a community garden or a pocket park. If there's an HA, contact them or mass mail the residents of the neighborhood. |
| OP here. Thanks so much! We have tried the adjacent neighbors, without success. The lot is in a sort of vacation community of retirees and second homes, which I think complicates things somewhat. As for not paying the taxes, DH and I both have clearances, so that's a no go. |

Talk to a real estate lawyer. You want to give up all rights and responsibility to the land. I can't imagine that you are obliged to it forever...
A real estate lawyer is your best bet, I think.

Won't this ruin their credit rating? |
