Robinson or Woodson?

It seems like Woodson has more cache, but I don't really see much that actually makes it better than Robinson. Thinking of buying in one of these two districts...not sure if the extra $ to buy in Woodson is worth it. Thoughts?

I can't speak to "cache," but there's an ongoing boundary study that likely will move some Fairfax HS students to Woodson and move some Woodson students to Robinson. That may have the effect of reducing some of the perceived difference between the schools.

Woodson has the AP program while Robinson has the IB program. Some people have a preference for one program over the other.

Robinson has both AP and IB.
There is so much more that is important in a high school education. Too many to mention.
Robinson is far more superior than Woodson.

Well, at least explain why, since that's the point of the whole post.

Both schools are VERY comparable academically. I think the reason people talk about Woodson so much is because it is a great school inside the beltway. As demand goes up (and a lot of people see closer to DC as highly desirable), so does the "buzz" of a good school.

Seriously, both schools are so great that you'd have to really split hairs to see a difference. Some people might like some things (like the school colors) at one school over another, but different strokes for different folks. You are in a great position to be picking between these two.

Uh, Woodson is not inside the Beltway. I'll grant you it is closer in than Robinson.

According to a FCPS security officer I heard speak last year, Woodson has no gang activity. Robinson certainly isn't overrun, but it's there--inevitable for a school of its size.

The Woodson redistricting could change that, of course. (I'm not saying it will; I don't know anything about the incoming neighborhoods.)

Yeah, those bad ass gangs from leafy green neighborhoods are downright scary!

The area slated to move from Fairfax to Woodson is the Fairfax Villa ES area. At the same time, a smaller Woodson "attendance island" in Fairfax Station that sits in the middle of the Robinson district would get moved to Robinson.

This is good to hear. It never made any logical sense that those particular FFX Station kids would go to Woodson. Granted, we all know why they "got" to go to Woodson but still...

Woodson is more challenging than Robinson. If a kid is average, the SAT score in Woodson would be slightly higher than the same kid from Robinson.

Are you saying the average is higher at Woodson, or that the same kid would end up scoring higher if he went to Woodson because it's harder? Or both?

The average score is higher at Woodson. I will need to have the variance of the scores to make a statistically sound conclusion . However, since the average scores have been higher consistently for many years, that suggests that the same kid would end up higher if he went to Woodson than Robinson
