I'm so sick of negotiating, arguing, working on deals. So very tired of it.
I'm 52yo and when I think about doing this until retirement, I want to fall on my sword and be done with it all. Anyone else? And what if anything does one do about creating an "encore career"? Because I cannot go on like this for another decade-plus. |
| Switch jobs. If you're at a firm, go to a different one, etc. etc. Wont be the same as it is now. |
I don't think switching firms would do anything. Maybe go in house or government? On the bright side, at least you are not a litigator! |
| I'd look at going in house. |

Yeah, in house is definitely one way to go. Another might be to look into working with more nonprofits who need legal work done.
Personally, I started out in litigation, couldn't take the conflict. Moved in house, which helped, but ultimately got out of law altogether and changed careers. That was 10 years ago. I'm your age now and excited that the rest of my working life won't be adversarial. |

OP here. I work in-house. Maybe I need to see what other role I could play in our legal dept.
Thanks. |
| Get out of the field. |
| If you're in house, is there another department in your company that appeals to you? |
If it were feasible, I would, but I don't think it's a realistic plan at this time. My DH is a social worker and has a chronic disease. He is 56 and I don't know how much longer he will be able to work and in any case, I make the lion's share of our household income. Our kids are 16 and 13 and we will need my income to get them through the next ten years or so. At this point/age, changing gears to something that would cost money to achieve, or net less income is just not feasible. |
Thanks. I wonder if compliance work would be more appealing on a day-to-day basis. Stressful in its own way I'm sure, but maybe less conflict. |
