How to dispose of extra fertility drugs?

Does anyone know if these should just be put in the garbage, taken to a pharmacy for disposal, or what? (I do know not to pour anything down the drain, but other than that....)

If they are unopened please please give them back to your doctor if they haven't expired. My dr was wonderful about giving me free vials when she knew I was paying out of pocket. I asked her where they came from and she said other patients returned their unused vials. Every little bit helps when it comes to paying out of pocket.

I donated my leftovers to my clinic. They use them to help people whose insurance doesn't cover meds.

NP here. Great idea, thank you. We are changing to donor egg and I have abou 15 vials of gonal f and two doses of ovidrel just sitting around.

I had the same question for one of SG nurses .. about the gonal f pen... there is always little left in there and these are hormones you really don't wan to put in the garbage.... these hormones are biohazard trash

You can just put this into your sharpie disposal box with used needles and return it to your clinic when full

15 vials!? That is A LOT of pens & $$$.

How many cycles was that for?

In my experience, i ordered as needed....maybe 5 pens per cycle(?)

If they are expired or for some reason you can't donate to your clinic, you can drop them off at a National Drug Take-back Initiative location. Next take-back day is April 27. They dispose of the drugs properly. http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/

perhaps her cycle was cancelled mid-way through.

donate back to your doctor. i've benefitted from donated meds and was able to donate back after a difft cycle.

I was going through an IUI at Shady Grove without insurance coverage this past spring. I asked the nurse about donations and she said they will take back meds from people and dispose of them but don't give them to other patients. Is this just at Shady Grove?

Wow. I hope that isn't true ... my clinic (CFA) is taking back my unused meds and promised to give them to another woman for whom it would make life easier.

OP, I do know that Grubbs also said they would buy them back from me if unopened ... in this case I don't have all that many left and just feel like donating them instead after having gone through it myself.

My nurse at SG in Annandale gave me Gonal-F when I was paying out of pocket for my IUI cycles.

That's not true about SGF, I've gotten meds from them for my first IVF cycle.

Wow, so it was just my nurse then at SG. She probably just didn't want to deal with it- I have not had a good feeling about her. Thanks for letting me know that is not the policy there!

Which office are you out of OP? If it's a smaller one they may not have a lot of stock.
