| How soon after having a glass of wine is it ok to breast feed? |
| 1 glass? I drink 1/2 and nurse 30 min after. |
| with a full glass I wait 3 hours to be on the safe side, but 2 is fine. |
| I abstain. I am making a big sacrifice to breastfeed so my babe has the best, so I don't want to take any chances! |
| I would have no problem drinking a glass of wine or two with dinner and breastfeeding immediately afterwards. All of my friends do the same. |
|
My lactation consultant said a glass of wine with dinner was fine, and OK to breastfeed afterward.

| Does breastmilk absorb the alcohol? If yes, how much? And how much of it has been shown to cause ill effects in a baby? Just curious - I have heard so much conflicting advice on this and haven't had any luck finding any conclusive studies. Even my ped. has no clue but tells me to avoid it. I personally get quite tipsy with one glass of wine so I am curious to know how much of the alcohol gets into the breastmilk i.e. would my little one absorb as much as me? |
| There is actually a product commercially available (at one of the large chain baby stores, I think), that tests the existence of alcohol in breast milk. |
|
I usually follow the time frame on the chart in this link:
http://www.realtechmom.com/alcohol-and-breastfeeding/ Basically, once you're no longer tipsy, the alcohol has left the breast milk. |

According to Jack Newman's book and some other sources I've read, the alcohol content in your milk is the same as in your blood.
So according to the blood alcohol calculator at this site: http://www.csgnetwork.com/bloodalcolevelcalc.html, a 130 lb woman drinking a 4 oz glass of wine (14% alcohol) will have about 0.02% alcohol blood level one hour after drinking it. That means your milk would be 0.02% alcohol. That is very little. |
| You will not believe this. But when I lived abroad, I was told to drink at least an ouce of beer a day to keep the milk flowing. They recommended the black beer, I think it was called milk stout. |
| My OB told me the same thing about beer as the PP - she told me to drink a guinness before bfing. I don't like beer but would sometimes drink a glass with dinner and then bf. I wouldn't do it if I felt the effects of the alcohol or if I thought that I needed more than one glass of wine ( which happened often! ) |
| My ped told my mom to drink a glass of beer while breastfeeding- he said it made better milk. My mom complied. I asked our ped and he said it didn't hurt anything and it was ok to have a glass of beer or a glass of wine- but to watch the portion sizes. Sometimes resturants can be very generous in their pours. He said no ill effects on the baby. He said it is when you cross the line from moderation to indulgence that you get problems and that people can have problems distinguishing the two, which is why there is a general prohibition. My OB also said it was ok to have a glass of wine here and there without incident. |

Beer has vitamin B which is needed for milk production.
The dark beer will have more of it. |
