Private & Independent Schools
I know the Thank You Note is very important to the school that you really want to attend. That has been posted on here over and over again. Can you share with me exactly what you wrote in your letter - I would love to hear from some applicants who were successful in getting in the school of their choice. Preferably Lower Schools, K and Pre-K classes.

Dear [NAME OF AD],
Thank you for taking the time to make our visit to [SCHOOL NAME] so informative and enjoyable. We were impressed by the energy of the teachers we met and the joy your students seem to take in learning. We really believe that [CHILD's NAME] would thrive at your school and hope very much to become a part of the community. In fact, that's just what I said while dining with President [NAME OF WINNING CANDIDATE] last night. In the meantime, as a token of our esteem, please accept our [SIX-FIGURE AMOUNT] pledge to your scholarship fund. Sincerely yours, [NWDC PARENT] |
| Didn't write any thank you notes. Still was accepted. |

My son wrote a note to the Landon Admissions director thanking her for the tour of Landon, and saying what he liked about the school (in kid language...I think he liked hearing about how they could do riflery in gym class, and he liked the cafeteria). I just corrected spelling, but it was an honest note from him about liking Landon (which he did).

| Never did thank you notes for DD, got into 3 of the 5 schools to which we applied for PreK. And the one time I did a thank you note for DS for another school, did not get in (granted it was not an entry year). I think a note from an older child appling to middle to upper school is probably a nice touch. |

Oops, sorry, I realize you were looking at younger grades. Yes, my son was 9 when he applied to Landon, so a note from him was appropriate. Don't struggle to have your pre-k kid write one!

I spent a lot of time thinking about what to write. In the end it was a waste of time. My DC was rejected everywhere anyway. I think it might be like when your kid gets a thank you card from a friend who recently had a birthday party. You read it together and think how nice, but if you didn't get it you wouldn't have remembered and you wouldn't be checking your mail for it either. I think my thank you cards ended up in the same place as the birthday party thank you cards. The trash.
So if you want to write a note because you're a thank you note by hand kind of person then do it. If you've never written one before then don't start now. |
| Did not write any and got into all schools applied to. |
| OP...thanks for the productive feedback. There have been so many posts on here about the necessity of a thank you note. Thanks for the reality check. |

Dear [NAME OF AD],
Thank you for taking the time to make our visit to [SCHOOL NAME] so informative and enjoyable. We were so excited that unfortunately my significant other suffered a bout of fatulence. I hope you did not notice. My children do not normally fight, but they got bored and the reason the younger one screamed is because the older one took the burger king toy away from her. She calmed down after the other was forced to hand it over. Please understand that the reason for the second screaming bout was because my significant other had turned his back and was outside and the older kid saw this as an opportunity to take the toy back. I really do have wonderful kids and they will certainly be an asset to your schoo. Sincerely yours, |
