Are service academies like West Point considered prestigious?

Looks like it's not the case.

The USMA has a 9% acceptance rate. The USNA has a 9.1% acceptance rate. The USAA has a 13.4% acceptance rate. I’m guessing your kid could not get in.

9% acceptance rate among 1300 SAT average applicant pool

Oh my kid got 1540 SAT and is very healthy, but doesn't want military lifestyle.
Rather go to GMU

And your kid is welcome to go to GMU. The academies aren’t for everyone. Congrats to your kid, and congrats to the academy-bound kids. There are a lot of ways to do well in this world.

I'm a huge fan of the service academies, but those particular books are totally cooked. They throw everyone who starts an application into the denominator. Of the kids who actually complete applications, around 50 percent are accepted.

this site must have more republicans than I expected.

Service academies are 1000% elite. It’s an absurd discussion.

I went to Yale. I majored in something that, candidly, is embarrassing. When I’ve interviewed Service Academy grads or even other BA grads with OCS experience, they have been 100 times out of 100 times well beyond their competitors in terms of maturity, professionalism, motivation, and just general competence. I’m way, way far away from a military hero worship GOPer, but if you want a 25 year old who is smart and can learn how to do things and take action in a business environment, I don’t know of a better litmus.

You’re just making assumptions. Wrong ones.

question - if a service applicant receives the needed congressional nomination are they then pretty much guaranteed acceptance to an academy like West Point?

No. They need to be academically and physically certified for admission. Nominations is not enough alone. Pass CFA, pass physical. compete with academic.

Exactly! And, poor + middle class kids. The only rich ones who go are ones forced by their dads since they went.

No, IIRC, the stats show around 50% acceptance if you meet all the other requirements and secure a nomination. Also, you can't actually apply if they don't deem you competitive enough to apply in the first place.

Lots of Dems in the military. Don’t be obtuse. Also lots of UMC going to academies.

Welcome to DCUM, and yes, there are tons of right-wing posters who try to sway others to their extreme views by sewing misinformation and conspiracy theories.
