Arlington DA

Rumor: Announcement coming that, starting Fall 2019, USSF will cease DA programming for U12s. And then the underlying political rumor: Cordeiro promised state associations that he would reduce the DA's scope in order to secure their votes.

Anyone go to yesterday's ID sessions? Were they well attended with new talent? Just wondering where all this new talent will come from with all of the DA/ECNL options at U13 and above...

I heard on other boards that girls should just stay put and wait until 14U. No one is looking at Arlington GDA in December -- This is about wooing players to stay put.

Have you not read the last 3 pages? It’s already been announced. No U12 DA starting next year...and no U13 DA the following year.

No u13 has not been announced and the u12 boys “announcement” came from an editor’s message not US Soccer letterhead. Giving the benefit of the doubt on the super secret memo to kill u12 boys DA.

Please show us the official super secret link on the u13 statement. Thanks.

I'm not crying about the DA, just disagreeing with the proposition that it will result in less total teams, or that it will not have an impact on the amount of field space available for other teams.

My opinion is that Arlington should get full DA. Because of their location they can draw from a large, diverse and talented player pool, and that will only get stronger for them with DCU moving to Loudoun. I also think they have done a good job with the DA teams they have so far. On the whole, their boys teams are stronger and play better soccer than either Loudoun or VDA, and their girls teams have done very well considering it's their first season.

They currently have the facilities to support a full DA, but not without a trade-off in terms of its effect on other members of the club. To run a full DA on both the girls and boys side, you would need to dedicate a minimum of two full size lighted turf fields 5 nights a week, plus Saturdays, to just the DA teams. DCU, with boys DA U12-19, has the use of one field 5 nights/week, but even with that they only can give their U13/U14 three practices per week instead of the DA-mandated four per week for those age groups. The stated reason for that was lack of field space. They can get away with it because they are an MLS club so their DA status is guaranteed. Other clubs don't get that luxury (as McLean learned when they were originally granted DA status but then had it revoked because of field space issues - https://www.soccerwire.com/news/mclean-youth-soccer-kicked-out-of-development-academy/).

I think it's great that Arlington has that many interested travel players that they can have 6-7 travel teams in one age group. That speaks to the size of their player pool, which is a plus.

Whether they can make it all work from a field space perspective is on them. Maybe they can get Bezos to kick in and sponser their DA teams - build them a field, put the Amazon name on their jerseys, ... why not?

i think i love you.... ASA is really struggling with field space IMO. My sons team is u13 so full field - practiced on 1/4 or less of a field all season long. I don't think you need a full field all the time... but at least a half once a week? Also... all these arguments about teams. say what you want, but at u13 they have DA/Red/White/Blue/Black. i am certain when the current 04s were this age, they had Red/White/Blue (maybe DA- i can't recall when that added- but still one less team at a minimum).... Whether you say the added team is DA or the black team retention (or both), it does not matter. Each age group they are carrying more teams than the did in prior years of the grouping. Last year at u12 they had DA, Red,White,Blue,Black, Silver (smaller teams of course). when the 04s were u12 they did not have 6 teams at the age group.

^ more teams=more $. Field space- so what, right?

i know... i sort of agree. I think they have gone too far on this and everyone is feeling the pinch. When my son started u9 it was four teams.... the year below him they started the 6 teams and now at u13 it is starting to feel really tight as these teams age up year after year. But i understand that it's hard. b/c when you reduce teams, you of course end up cutting kids who have possibly been playing for the club for many years which parents (and kids) don't like. I hope (doubtful) someone is thinking this all through. my guess is with some thought there is a better time to reduce. In middle school it seems kids end up just quitting soccer vs finding another club. but maybe i am wrong.

So that means Arlington is getting U16-U17 DA next year, both boys and girls?

Is that confirmed?

My understanding is that U16 and U17 will be separate on both the boys and girls DA sides (4 NEW TEAMS for Arlington).

Yes. Excellent. More DA teams is exactly what we need.

Do you mean "we" as in, non-DA ASA players, or DMV area soccer in general?

The DMV area in general. I understand that this might be good news for ASA families, but it just waters down further the level of competitiveness of elite programs in the DMV area.
